Description

While dominant media narratives paint a simple equation that teens + screens = negative outcomes, the latest data point to a much more complicated picture. The nuances in the relationship between screen time and mental health require that mental health professionals, educators, counselors, and caregivers increase their knowledge of these issues and build a mediation toolkit that responds to the developmental needs of adolescents as well as the complexity of the digital world. In this interactive and energizing presentation, Erin Walsh will use science, stories, and data to cut through conflicting messages about technology and teens. She will walk you through the latest evidence on topics like over-use, anxiety and depression, and online cruelty and exploitation. You will leave with practical tools and strategies to help youth manage risks while building on their digital strengths. Short small group discussions, individual reflections, and Q&A will help participants make meaning of their learning.

Erin Walsh is a parent, speaker, educator, and writer. She works with communities across the country who want to better understand child and adolescent development and cut through conflicting information about kids and technology. She has 20 years of experience in bringing science and strategies to families and educators alongside her father, David Walsh. They created the Spark & Stitch Institute in 2019.
